Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 5334 (June 20, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Hugh C. Hoffman, Jr. (ASN: 0-5337096), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Hoffman distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 5 April 1968, while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company B, 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a combat mission near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Lieutenant Hoffman exposed himself to the hostile fire as he led an assault on the insurgent’s positions and succeeded in breaking their defense. He continually exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he moved among his men, directing their line of fire and checking for wounded comrades. His actions contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. Lieutenant Hoffman’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
