Headquarters, 7th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 76 (October 23, 1950)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard Carlson (ASN: 0-1355744), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy on 21 September 1950, near Kuroil-li, Korea. On this date, Company G had suffered heavy casualties and had the route of communication to the rear cut by the enemy. Without regard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Carlson voluntarily guided litter jeeps to and from the company, laterally across the front lines. Despite constant enemy observation and frequent automatic weapons and mortar fire, Lieutenant Carlson assisted in loading and evacuated the wounded men. This action was instrumental in saving the lives of four men. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Carlson on this occasion reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
