Headquarters, 28th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 27 (September 17, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John J. Doyle (ASN: 36372184), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 10 August 1944, while serving with Company B, *** Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, near *****, France. Voluntarily and with utter disregard for his own personal safety, Private Doyle remained exposed to intense enemy small arms and mortar fire in order to assist in the evacuation of seriously wounded members of his platoon. Despite the fact that he had the opportunity to withdraw to a place of safety with the other members of his platoon, he chose to remain in his exposed position. As a result of the determined courage and personal bravery of Private Doyle the lives of two members of his platoon were saved. His actions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
