The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant James B. Flynn (ASN: 20301971), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 8 August 1944, while serving with Company D, *** Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, near ****, France. Although intense artillery fire from a commanding enemy position had pinned down his platoon, Technical Sergeant Flynn disregarded his own wounds and voluntarily exposed himself to the deadly enemy fire in order to render assistance to other more seriously wounded members of the platoon. In the midst of the devastating barrage he coolly administered vital first aid to the wounded, thereafter crawling across an open area to arrange for their evacuation to the battalion aid station. After reorganizing his platoon, he proceeded to launch an attack upon the strong enemy position. At this point, however, he calmly placed his senior noncommissioned officer in command, he himself being unable to continue because of the loss of a vast quantity of blood. The heroic and fearless actions of Technical Sergeant Flynn were directly responsible for saving the lives of three members of his platoon and his gallantry, aggressive leadership, and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
