The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Frank B. DeLuca (ASN: 37550235), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 6 August 1944, while serving with Company E, *** Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, near *****, France. The 2d Battalion, *** Infantry had launched an attack on their new objective, the town of *****, and he proceeded about half way when they were met by a strong enemy counterattack directed principally at Company E. Undaunted by the numerous casualties around him, and despite the face that everyone immediately rushed to the nearby hedgerows to seek shelter and dig-in, Private DeLuca, in his capacity as platoon messenger, with determined courage despite formidable screens of intense opposing small arms, machine gun, and 88-mm. fire, proceeded with his job of carrying vital information to the various platoons. During the course of this action, Private DeLuca received wounds which subsequently proved fatal. His personal bravery, initiative, and unselfish devotion to duty without regard for his own personal safety served as an inspiration to all who saw him and reflected the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
