The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert C. Diecks (ASN: 0-1293381), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 12 August 1944, while serving with the 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, at *****, France. For a period of nine days, First Lieutenant Diecks indefatigably performed the duties of S-2 and S-3 of the 3d Battalion, 112th Infantry Regiment. Although working under intense artillery and mortar fire, his clear thinking and ability to evaluate all situations was highly instrumental in holding together the badly battered units of his battalion. During the initial phase of the attack on ****, he made a front line reconnaissance in the face of sniper controlled mountains and enemy artillery fire. As he was returning from the mission he was killed by enemy fire, but the data he had gathered was saved and contributed substantially to the subsequent advance of the battalion. First Lieutenant Diecks’ bravery, initiative, and unselfish devotion to duty without regard for his own personal safety reflected the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
