The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Technical Sergeant John T. Fears, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota, on 27 January 1983. On that date, Sergeant Fears rushed to the scene of the exploding B-52G aircraft 57-6507, to supervise the tow of B-52G aircraft 57-6479 which was immediately downwind of aircraft 57-6507. Despite exploding fuel cells from 6507, Sergeant Fears, disregarding his own personal safety for the safety of others, re-entered the area and attached the tow bard to the tow vehicle allowing the aircraft to be towed to safety. This accomplishment prevented the complete destruction of aircraft and further serious injury or loss of life to personnel working on the aircraft. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Fears reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
