Lieutenant Colonel Swett distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of the 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in action against the enemy in Binh Dinh Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 1 November 1966. When a platoon of his battalion began sustaining casualties, Lieutenant Colonel Swett ordered his command helicopter to land and evacuate the casualties. In the face of intense enemy fire, he assisted in placing the casualties aboard his aircraft. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Swett, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
