Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 57 (March 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Henry B. Reed (ASN: 13032459), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as a litter bearer with the Medical Detachment, 134th Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 and 14 December 1944, in France. Private Reed evacuated two casualties through a savage enemy assault which had severed the line of evacuation. Knowing that the lives of the casualties depended upon evacuation, he and a companion unhesitatingly left the Company area with the two casualties and advanced into the face of death or capture by the enemy. They were last seen as the passed another company, approximately 600 yards away and were reported missing in action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
