The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Albert C. Burke (ASN: 42024677), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 17 April 1945, while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, near Fazzano, Italy. Corporal Burke was in charge of a seven man detail charged with delivering two flame throwers from the rear to the forward command post over two thousand yards away. The route was over dangerous and mined trails that were under constant enemy fire. When the group had almost covered half the distance, a tremendous mortar barrage terrified the group and they desperately sought cover. Corporal Burke’s encouraging words and calm attitude prevented the men from abandoning the flame throwers and inspired them to continue forward. When they were within two hundred yards of their destination, a heavy mortar shell landed amongst the group wounding every man. Directing the men to drop the flame throwers, Corporal Burke fearlessly helped the wounded men back down the trail although under constant machine gun fire. One of the wounded wandered off the trail and stepped on a schu-mine. His foot was blown off at the ankle and flying fragments caused other wounds. Corporal Burke saw that all the other wounded men reached the aid station safely and bravely entered the mined area to assist his wounded comrade. Unmindful of the mortar barrages which chewed up the trail, Corporal Burke picked up the seriously wounded man and carried him back where medical aid was immediately administered. Twice more he returned, alone to where the flame throwers were dropped and personally delivered them to the forward command post. The brave action of Corporal Burke undoubtedly saved the wounded man’s life and assured the delivery of this vitally needed equipment. The splendid courage and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Burke reflect the greatest credit on himself and the glorious traditions of the armed forces.
