The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arthur Tosi (ASN: 42011797), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 2 October 1944, while serving with Company L, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, near Castel del Rio, Italy. While on a patrol which had been surrounded by a superior number of enemy, Private Tosi, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, rushed up to a house from which a machine gun was firing. He crawled along the wall and tossed a hand grenade directly into the window from which the enemy was firing. He then rushed to the door and forced his way into the house, firing his rifle rapidly as he proceeded. Private Tosi knocked out this enemy weapon, and killed one and wounded two Germans. This gallant action by Private Tosi enabled his patrol to set up a defensive position which it maintained until relief succeeded in reaching them, which is in keeping with the highest traditions of the armed forces.
