The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Louis J. Cardamone, United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed hostile force on 14 November 1950 while serving as the acting platoon leader and Platoon Sergeant of 1st Platoon, Company F, 2d Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Korea. On this date, Sergeant Cardamone’s platoon was ordered to attack across the frozen Ungi River and seize Hill 1542, as part of a regimental attack. He led his men across the half-mile, partially frozen river under heavy enemy rifle, machine gun and mortar fire to the other side of the river, where the Soldiers regrouped near the village of Yongyong-Ni for a frontal assault up Hill 1542. Despite below freezing temperatures and receiving a serious chest wound while leading his Soldiers, Sergeant Cardamone continually exposed himself to enemy fire in order to direct his platoon’s fire towards the enemy with devastating effect. Upon reaching the summit, he quickly established a base of fire to protect the western flank and then lead Company F in destroying the remainder of enemy forces on Hill 1542. As a result, 2d Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment was able to secure its objective before nightfall. Sergeant Cardamone’s gallantry and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
