The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Major (Infantry) Benjamin L. Abramowitz (ASN: 0-73236), United States Army, for heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force. Major Abramowitz distinguished himself by heroism in action on 7 February 1967, while serving as Executive Officer of the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division during an engagement with an enemy force near Bong Son, Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Major Abramowitz was instrumental in defeating an enemy attack launched against his unit’s forward base camp area. Without regard for his own safety, he quickly set up a mortar while under intense enemy small arms fire and began countermortar fire on the hostile force. During the battle Major Abramowitz silenced both enemy mortars, one of them while acting as a forward observer and shouting instructions to his crew as he again exposed himself to heavy enemy fire. Major Abramowitz’ courageous action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
