The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fifth Grade Frederick J. Boerger (ASN: 35677090), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations. On 11 June 1944, when a gasoline fire enveloped another soldier, Technician Fifth Grade Boerger without regard for his personal safety caught the panic-stricken man, threw him to the ground and smothered the flames with a raincoat. Technician Fifth Grade Boerger’s heroic action prevented the possible death of the soldier, who suffered severe third degree burns.
