The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Herman H. Ludwig (ASN: 37120745), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations. In the vicinity of ***, France, on 12 June 1944 when his platoon withdrew from an untenable position, Sergeant Ludwig, an acting squad leader, without regard for his personal safety, remained alone in an exposed position to cover its withdrawal by throwing grenades. After arrival upon the new position, Sergeant Ludwig discovered that one of his men was missing. He returned in the face of the enemy fire to the position just given up to find the man wounded and succeeded in bringing him back to the new position. Sergeant Ludwig’s courage and loyalty to his men were in accordance with the highest military traditions and of great inspirational value to his platoon.
