Wade Sanders was belatedly awarded the Silver Star in 1992. In 2011, in a rare action, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus revoked that award noting, “had the subsequently determined facts and evidence surrounding both the incident for which the award was made and the processing of the award itself been known to the Secretary of the Navy in 1992, those facts would have prevented the award of the Silver Star.”

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Wade R. Sanders, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the Viet Cong while serving as Officer in Charge of a Swift Boat (PCF) attached to Coastal Division FOURTEEN, Coastal Squadron ONE near Nha Trang Bay in the Republic of Vietnam. On 16 March 1969 prior to going out on patrol, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Sanders learned of recent intelligence reports that suspected additional enemy activity on a small island in Nha Trang Bay. Because of intense enemy activity and resultant fire fights, this area had become known as a hot zone. Consequently, at twilight, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Sanders ordered his PCF out to probe the enemy presence. As the boat approached within 500 yards of the Island, it came under intense automatic arms fire from concealed positions ashore. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Sanders directed his boat to proceed head-on toward the source and attack the intense enemy fire at high speed. Leading the assault from the port boat deck, he ordered the forward twin .50 caliber machine guns to open fire on the muzzle flashes and tracers. Although immediately wounded in the thigh, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Sanders courageously continued the attack, called for air support, and directed three aggressive assaults on the firing positions at very close range until all hostile fire ceased. His bold initiative and resolute determination inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in at least three Viet Cong soldiers killed and numerous wounded. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Sanders’ indomitable fighting spirit, personal bravery, and complete dedication to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. [NOTE: This award was revoked by the Secretary of the Navy in 2011.]
