The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Oscar Lee O’Connor (ASN: 0-5322152), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Company D, 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. Captain O’Connor distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 22 November 1967, during a combat assault mission near Phan Thiet, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under intense hostile fire, Captain O’Connor exposed himself to the enemy fire as he moved from position to position to establish a defensive perimeter. Realizing the size of the enemy force, he withdrew his men back to a more secure position. He then organized patrols and led them back to the battle field to recover the casualties. Captain O’Connor’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
