The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Gary William Carlson (ASN: OF-111468), United States Army, for gallantry in action. First Lieutenant Carlson distinguished himself by heroic actions on 2 March 1969, while serving with Troop B, 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance in force operation, elements of Troop B came in contact with a large enemy force in well-fortified positions. During the initial contact, one of the tanks was struck by a rocket propelled grenade and immediately burst into flames. After insuring that the wounded crew members had been evacuated to a safe area, Lieutenant Carlson directed his vehicles on line and began to assault the hostile positions. As the battle progressed, Lieutenant Carlson, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to the hail of fire as he personally silenced several of the aggressor’s emplacements with hand grenades. When the Troop Commander was wounded and evacuated from the area, Lieutenant Carlson immediately assumed command of the troop and directed his men’s fire throughout the remainder of the contact. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the defeat of the hostile force. Lieutenant Carlson’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
