Under the provisions of Executive Order 11545, July 9, 1970, the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America take pleasure in awarding the Defense Distinguished Service Medal to General Robert Charles Kingston (ASN: 0-71534), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service contributing to national security and defense, in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, as Commander, Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force, and as Commander in Chief, United States Central Command, from July 1981 to November 1985. General Kingston’s leadership, professionalism and sensitivity to the military, political and diplomatic complexities in his area of responsibility ensured the accomplishment of all goals and objectives set for these two commands. When directed by National Command Authorities, he responded to numerous contingencies with the proper force at the appropriate place and time to deter aggression. His commands were the single most stabilizing influence in this volatile area of responsibility in southwest Asia, the Arabian peninsula and the Horn of Africa. His tireless efforts in cultivating relationships at the most senior levels, both military and civilian, resulted in an understanding, trust and respect for the United States by the leaders of the countries within his area of responsibility and have led to agreements on numerous bilateral defense issues. The distinctive accomplishments of General Kingston culminate a distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect great credit upon himself, the United States Army, and the Department of Defense.
