In 1917 Edward Powers served as a Private First Class in the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps Reserve, before being given a temporary commission in 1918. He was discharged in 1919, and subsequently commissioned in the Air Service in 1920. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1949 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
