The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Earle A. Goodrich (ASN: 0-428471), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as a member of the Air Crew of a B-24 Liberator Bomber in the 512th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 376th Bombardment Group (Heavy), NINTH Air Force, in action against enemy on 6 November 1942 during an operation by a formation of B-17E Flying Fortress Bombers against the enemy forces at Tobruk Harbor. Acting as Pilot, he showed such superb control over his craft that he kept in a good formation which not only completed a perfect bomb pattern but also presented a formidable front to the enemy aircraft and was thereby a contributor to the success of the mission. The bombing run was made and anti-aircraft fire was intense and exceedingly accurate. As soon as the ground fire was out-distanced, the enemy fighters began to attack, but due to the perfect formation held by the bombers, the attacks were warded off with the shooting down of one plane and probable damage to others. The raid resulted in the confirmed sinking of a large enemy supply transport and the confirmed sinking of a medium Axis submarine. Without the skill of Lieutenant Goodrich, it is doubtful if that particular plane would have returned safely to its base. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Air Forces.
