The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Conra Robert Zimmermann (AFSN: FR-3178857), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Pilot Systems Operator over Southeast Asia on 21 March 1971. On that date, Captain Zimmermann was the lead backseater on a mission to visually reconnoiter a section of hostile route structure that was heavily defended by anti-aircraft artillery. Through his expert knowledge of the F-4E’s electronic systems, Captain Zimmermann was able to direct his aircraft commander on a precise low altitude navigation run over the route. At the same time, Captain Zimmermann’s expert judgment of when to turn to avoid hostile fire allowed the flight to successfully complete the assigned mission without the loss of a single aircraft. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Zimmermann reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
