The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles H. Young (ASN: 7025956), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving with the 42d Bombardment Squadron, 18th Pursuit Group, during the Japanese aerial attack on Hickam Field, Territory of Hawaii, on 7 December 1941. Corporal Young was helping load bombs in the plane when the bombing and strafing started. He immediately manned one of the machine guns in the plane and returned effective fire on the enemy aircraft. During the second raid, Corporal Young shot down one plane and disabled another. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Young, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
