Headquarters, Allied Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, General Orders No. 41 (August 26, 1942)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Edward R. Yerington (ASN: 0-434558), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as Navigator of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber of the 435th Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group (Heavy), Far East Air Force, in aerial operations over Buna, New Guinea, on 25 July 1942. Second Lieutenant Yerington was a member of the air crew of a bomber that was on a patrol and reconnaissance flight over Buna. While at a low altitude, the plane was attacked by fifteen Zeros. Lieutenant Yerington manned one of the nose guns, and with the aid of the other gunners, succeeded in destroying three enemy fighters and caused damage to others. The courage and bravery displayed by Lieutenant Yerington enabled our aircraft to return safely to its base with valuable information concerning enemy troop movements. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Yerington, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
