(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Frank Harvey Woltman (ASN: 0-425053), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Co-Pilot of a B-24 Liberator Bomber in the 513th Bombardment Squadron, 376th Bombardment Group (Heavy), NINTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the North Africa Theater of Operations, on 31 January 1943. First Lieutenant Woltman’s Bomber was the lead plane on a combat mission to bomb Messina Harbor in Sicily. Two engines were knocked out of commission by anti-aircraft artillery, but they stayed on their bomb run and hit their target. They were then set upon by German fighter planes and after a running battle, were forced to make a water crash landing into the Tyrrhenian Sea, twenty miles off the coast of Messina, Sicily. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Woltman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
