The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) Harold C. Wolfe (ASN: 0-816193), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action as Pilot of a P-51 Mustang Fighter Airplane of the 317th Fighter Squadron, 325th Fighter Group, FIFTEENTH Air Force, in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, on 26 July 1944. Captain Wolfe participated as escort to heavy bombers attacking vital enemy installations in Austria. En route to the target, when engaging a force of twenty enemy aircraft with his comrades, Captain Wolfe noticed twenty additional enemy fighters attacking the bombers. Realizing the imminent danger to the bomber formation, displaying outstanding courage and aggressiveness, Captain Wolfe skillfully turned and engaged the hostile forces. Despite the superior number of enemy planes, he successfully beat off their repeated attacks until his comrades joined him to destroy a total of thirteen enemy planes. Through his exceptional gallantry and combat proficiency the bombers were thus enabled to continue on through for a highly successful bombing mission. By his conspicuous courage, professional skill and intense devotion to duty, as evidenced throughout over sixty-nine successful mission against the enemy together with four enemy aircraft destroyed in aerial flight, Captain Wolfe has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
