The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Roger H. Williams (ASN: 0-421151), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as a Pilot of a P-40 Warhawk Fighter Airplane of the 40th Fighter Squadron, 35th Fighter Group, Far East Air Force, in action over Sourabaya, Java, on 19 February 1942. Lieutenant Williams was Pilot in a flight of eight P-40 type aircraft that intercepted a flight of nine Japanese bombers near Sourabaya. The bombers bunched in a protective formation as the P-40’s came in for the attack, but on his first pass Lieutenant Williams shot down one of the enemy. He later returned his plane safely to the home base. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Williams, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
