Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 9143 (December 27, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John Eugene Bean (ASN: 0-5433515), United States Army, for gallantry in action. First Lieutenant Bean distinguished himself by heroic actions on 23 November 1968, while serving as the artillery forward observer with Battery A, 2nd Battalion, 77th Artillery Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance in force mission, Company C came under heavy mortar, RPG, and automatic weapons attack. First Lieutenant Bean immediately called artillery fire onto the enemy positions, but already, numerous casualties existed as a result of the intense hostile fire. First Lieutenant Bean was wounded, but ignoring his own pain, he continued to function as artillery observer, until it became apparent to him that command of the friendly element was lost. He immediately assumed command of the company and while exposed to heavy fire, moved about directing the men. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the saving of the lives of many friendly troops and the defeat of the enemy. First Lieutenant Bean’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
