The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Anthony E. Keller, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. First Lieutenant Keller distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a helicopter of Troop C, 7th Armored Squadron, 1st Air Cavalry, on 22 August 1969, supporting a night perimeter security force of Vinh Long Airfield. He was called to provide illumination for a small outpost which was in heavy contact. During the fight the outpost sustained a casualty with head and chest wounds. First Lieutenant Keller elected to medevac the casualty himself. The ground unit advised him to land to a flashlight on a road. Alertly avoiding an enemy trap, he sighted the correct lights and made his approach, which entailed a hovering landing into an unlighted confined area. As the casualty weas brought to the ship, a flare was ignited, silhouetting the ship and bringing it under automatic weapons fire. He dispatched his crew to aid in the loading and then guided his ship out of the pickup zone to safety. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
