The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Mitchell D. Monk, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Abilene, Texas, on 19 May 2022. On that date, he noticed a firetruck struggling to contain a rapidly spreading wildfire. With disregard for his own safety and without formal firefighting training, Staff Sergeant Monk rushed to provide assistance to the embattled firefighters. Throughout the night, he and the crew bravely fought the expanding flames and multiple spot fires. While battling a particularly dangerous flareup, the extreme heat and high wind resulted in an unpredictable encirclement that trapped Staff Sergeant Monk and the firefighters. As the flames quickly closed in, the heat grew to life-threatening temperatures and the air filled with smoke, obscuring visibility and instilling panic in the men. It was in that moment of chaos that Staff Sergeant Monk shouted to the crew to focus their attention on a potential escape point. At his direction, the crew gathered and aimed their lines as the driver set course. With no time to spare, the hose operators opened their lines and fanned a wall of high-pressure water ahead of the truck as the driver barreled through the flames. Staff Sergeant Monk’s plan shieled the truck and crew, allowing them to bolt through the inferno while sustaining only minor damage and burns. Had it not bee for the quick thinking and bravery he exhibited, the truck and crew would have perished. The exemplary heroism displayed by Staff Sergeant Monk reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
