The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Riley J. McVeay (ASN: OF-104491), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain McVeay, a member of Battery B, 6th Battalion, 14th Artillery Regiment, distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 12 November 1965, while serving as commanding officer of a Provisional Infantry Rifle Company participating in a security operation at Plei La Puch, Republic of Vietnam. At approximately 2345 hours, Captain McVeay’s unit was subjected to intense Veit Cong 60-mm. mortar and small arms fire. Captain McVeay, oblivious to his safety, openly exposed himself to the hostile fire, and led his men in an effective counterattack against the insurgents. During the course of action, Captain McVeay sustained a back injury when thrown to the ground by a blast. He quickly recovered and once again, exposing himself to the elements, moved from one firing position to another, inspiring his men to continue the assigned mission. Upon discovering that both his first platoon leader and platoon sergeant were seriously wounded, Captain McVeay immediately assisted in their evacuation rom the combat area. He then returned to his company’s position and directed their suppressive fire on the attacking force. Through his dauntless actions and unimpeachable valor in close combat against a superior Veit Cong force, Captain McVeay was most instrumental in leading a successful counterattack. His gallantry and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
