The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Aviation Electronics Technician Courtney W. Adair, United States Navy, for heroism while serving as Leading Chief Petty Officer assigned to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron SEVENTY-TWO (HSM-72) on 13 January 2023. Chief Adair displayed extraordinary courage and bravery while saving three passengers from a submerged vehicle. While shopping with his family in Orange Park, Florida, Chief Adair witnessed a gray sedan transiting at high speed through the parking lot. The vehicle sped past them and Chief Adair heard the car crash. The vehicle had impacted a vinyl fence and traveled off a cement retaining wall into a pond landing upside down. He quickly removed his jacket, glasses, and shoes to jump into the frigid water to render assistance. As he entered the water the driver and a female passenger surfaced crying for help, both of whom could not swim. Acting quickly, he assisted both the driver and the female passenger on top of the submerged vehicle to wait while he dover underwater for the third passenger. After multiple attempts to submerge and enter the vehicle, Chief Adair and the third occupant exited through the rear window of the vehicle and surfaced. His quick thinking and decisive actions ensured the survival of all the occupants of the vehicle. Chief Adair’s professionalism, perseverance, and loyal devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
