The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Senior Airman E-Quantay L. Mason, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Phoenix Raven, C-17A, at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, on 22 August 2021. On that date, Airman Mason received intelligence of an imminent suicide attack, but under the extraordinary circumstances, elected to continue despite the risk. On the ground in Kabul, Airman Mason assisted in on loading 450 evacuees and worked with his partner and crew to physically screen each passenger, confiscating knives and other crude weapons concealed amongst the passengers. While airborne enroute to Al Udeid Air Base, a sixteen year-old Afghan mother fell unconscious near Airman Mason’s position at the aft of the cargo compartment. Airman Mason quickly provided lifesaving initial aid and helped carry her out of the passenger mob to the upstairs crew bunk for further care. While she received care, multiple male passengers became agitated and tried to gain access to the flight deck. Airman Mason quickly responded and physically prevented the men from breaching the flight deck, and further defended the flight deck from unruly passengers to keep order during a swift landing. His quick thinking and decisive action amid chaos in flight led to a safe arrival, life-saving support for the mother, and the survival of the crew, passengers, and aircraft. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Airman Mason reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
