The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman First Class Terry L. Wetzel, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life in the Republic of Korea on 25 October 1968. On that date, Airman Wetzel was a crewmember aboard a rescue helicopter that was launched to aid a Korean fisherman trapped at sea by a fast rising tide. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Airman Wetzel entered the water and overpowered a tremendous current to reach and provide aid to the anguished fisherman. His bravery and his high degree of professionalism undoubtedly saved a life and helped solidify the alliance between the United States of America and the Republic of Korea. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Airman Wetzel has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
