The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ezra Bartlett Mann, II, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy in Germany, on 1 April 1945. First Lieutenant Mann unhesitatingly and fearlessly left positions of comparative personal safety on two successive occasions in order to assure himself that his men occupied positions of maximum protection commensurate with effective fire power. With complete disregard of danger, he executed a bold personal reconnaissance in the face of heavy small arms and observed artillery fire, located the positions of the enemy’s forward observers and returned to his armored care through the heavy concentration of fire. He then calmly directed the fire of his 37 millimeter gun against the enemy until they were either killed or driven off. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Mann, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
