The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Hospital Corpsman First Class Justin D. Knowles, United States Navy, for heroism as a member of SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team,
while conducting an at-sea life saving mission of a foreign national merchant seaman from 14 to 16 February 2003. Placing his own life in jeopardy and demonstrating exceptional tactical skill, poise, and astute medical ability, Petty Officer Knowles conducted a static line parachute insertion 310 miles off the Hawaiian Islands, boarded the Merchant Vessel NORDRHINE, and rendered life saving medical care to a crew member with impending acute renal failure. His execution of a delicate and complex surgical procedure ensured the proper treatment and stabilization of the patient until he was medically evacuated for follow-on care in Hilo, Hawaii. Petty Officer Knowles’ actions were credited with saving the patient’s life. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Petty Officer Knowles undoubtedly prevented the loss of life, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
