While at the American-Turkish Beach, a soldier was carried approximately 70 yards off shore by a strong undertow or riptide. Upon calling for help, Sergeant Body and two other soldiers immediately responded to his call, swam out to him, however in the rescue attempt he was caught up in the mainstream of the current and lost his life. Sergeant Body’s heroic efforts to save another were in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on him and the United States Army.
