The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Warrant Officer Two Charles D. Moore (ASN: W-3159164), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Chief Warrant Officer Two Moore distinguished himself by heroic actions on 25 February 1969, while serving as an Aircraft Commander with Company B, 25th Aviation Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. When Fire Support Base Diamond came under enemy assault, Chief Warrant Officer Two Moore volunteered to fly a mission in support of the beleaguered ground element. Upon arriving at the area under attack, Chief Warrant Officer Two Moore was informed of the tactical situation. Realizing the consequences of accurate enemy 51-caliber machine gun fire, Chief Warrant Officer Two Moore, with complete disregard for his own safety, flew his aircraft at tree top level in order to detect enemy movement. Exposed to deadly hostile fire, Chief Warrant Officer Two Moore placed devastating mini-gun and rocket fire on the aggressors. He continued to concentrate his fire on the automatic weapons positions, enabling other gunships to fire on the advancing enemy ground troops. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the repulsion of the insurgents and success of the mission. Chief Warrant Officer Two Moore’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
