The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Fred B. Stuckey, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant Stuckey distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 2 April 1970, while serving as a rifleman with Ranger Team 31, Company F, 75th Infantry Regiment (Ranger), 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Elements of Ranger Team 31 were on a reconnaissance mission when they came under intense small arms fire from an enemy position. Sergeant Stuckey was in front of the formation at the time of engagement. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Stuckey exposed himself to a hail of enemy fire as he positioned himself to return effective fire on the hostile force. Sergeant Stuckey’s quick reaction and accurate fire resulted in the silencing of the enemy position. As the Rangers began to move forward, they once again encountered heavy enemy small arms fire. Once again, with complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Stuckey exposed himself to the hail of enemy fire as he maneuvered to effective fighting positions and placed devastating fire on the aggressors. His accurate fire resulted in overcoming the enemy. Sergeant Stuckey’s valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and thwarting of the hostile force. Sergeant Stuckey’s braver and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
