Department of the Air Force, Special Order GB-449 (July 14, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Sergeant Timothy R. Chrissis, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, on 1 December 1970. On that date, Sergeant Chrissis rushed into the area where a serious aircraft fire had developed during a hot refueling operation. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Chrissis, despite the imminent danger of a massive explosion, entered the fire to help rescue the pilot trapped there because of injuries sustained in egressing the aircraft. He succeeded in extinguishing the burning clothing and in removing the pilot to a place of relative safety where he assisted in administering emergency first aid treatment. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Chrissis has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
