Headquarters, Americal Division, General Orders No. 4336 (May 27, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Gregory L. Jackson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Jackson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 29 March 1969, while serving as a Medic with Company D, 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On that date, the company was participating in a combat sweep near Duc Pho when it encountered a large North Vietnamese Army force. In the initial contact, the unit sustained several casualties. Specialist Fourth Class Jackson was notified that a friendly soldier was wounded and lying in a direct line with the enemy fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Fourth Class Jackson maneuvered through the hostile fire, administered first aid, and carried his comrade to a secure position. As he returned to the hostile area, he observe another friendly soldier fall wounded. Despite the hostile fire impacting all around him, he rushed to the aid of his fellow soldier. He was wounded while moving across the open terrain, but managed to crawl the remainder of the way and treat his comrade before moving him to safety. His courageous actions were directly responsible for saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. Specialist Fourth Class Jackson’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
