The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Warren C. Mackey (ASN: 35298029), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Luxembourg, on 19 December 1944, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States. Near Ettelbruck, Luxembourg, Staff Sergeant Mackey observed that one of his comrades was missing after they had made a strategic move. Despite a painful wound, he returned through severe enemy fire to the old position and carried his wounded comrade to a position of comparative safety. Staff Sergeant Mackey’s leadership and devotion to his men reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Military Service.
