    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Clarence G. Hamre (ASN: 36843628), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action in Germany on 15 March 1945, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States. At Scheden, Germany, Staff Sergeant Hamre crawled through severe enemy fire to an advantageous position from which he repulsed several fierce hostile attacks, saved his comrades lives, inflicted casualties on the enemy, and opened a way for his company’s successful attack. Staff Sergeant Hamre’s courage and devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
