The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Charles H. Hames (ASN: 39581431), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in France, on 26 November 1944, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States. At Tetingham, France, Private Hames, while advancing through severe hostile fire to combat a sniper, was seriously wounded in both legs by an enemy machine gun. Despite the pain, he courageously maintained his position and after sighting the hostile emplacement, he destroyed it with a rifle grenade. Private Hames’ courage and untiring devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
