The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Louis C. Goebel (ASN: 42178474), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in Germany on 4 March 1945, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States. At Mainz, Germany, Private First Class Goebel, disregarding his own personal safety, exposed himself to severe enemy fire to crawl over 75 yards of hazardous terrain to destroy an enemy fortification and its occupants that were harassing his company. Private First Class Goebel’s courage and aggressiveness reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Military Service.
