The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Nicholas T. Cervantes, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life on Highway 98, Okaloosa Island, Florida, on 15 November 2018. On that date Staff Sergeant Cervantes and three passengers were traveling eastbound on Highway 98, when another vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed struck their vehicle from behind. The impact forced Staff Sergeant Cervantes’ vehicle to start rolling over, cross the highway median, and into oncoming traffic, where a westbound vehicle struck them again. Staff Sergeant Cervantes’ vehicle came to rest on its roof in the center of the highway. Without pause, Staff Sergeant Cervantes crawled form his vehicle, directed bystanders to stop traffic, and helped his three injured passengers to safety. Staff Sergeant Cervantes then observed the vehicle that had initially struck his, was now on its roof with fire spreading from the engine. With complete disregard for his own life, Staff Sergeant Cervantes fearlessly rushed to the vehicle and pulled the first passenger to safety. Staff Sergeant Cervantes then re-entered the burning vehicle a third time, but was unable to reach the last passenger before flames completely engulfed the car. Ultimately, Staff Sergeant Cervantes returned to the vehicle a third time, but was unable top reach the last passenger before flames completely engulfed the car. Ultimately, Staff Sergeant Cervantes saved two lives and continued to render first aid to those injured at the scene while waiting for first responders to arrive. By his heroic action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Staff Sergeant Cervantes has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
