The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William R. Trommer (ASN: US-52812415), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile enemy force, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Trommer distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a grenadier with Company D, 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy in on 10 May 1968, during a combat mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Private First Class Trommer continually exposed himself to the hostile fire in order to place accurate suppressive fire on the enemy emplacements. Disregarding his own safety, Private First Class Trommer then crossed an open area as he moved to a more advantageous position and continued to engage the insurgents’ fortification. His actions contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. Private First Class Trommer’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
