The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant (then Lieutenant, Junior Grade) Blasé Christopher Zamucen, United States Navy, for heroic conduct in rescuing survivors of the U.S.S. Mississinewa (AO-59), after that vessel was torpedoed at Ulithi Atoll, on 20 November 1944. Sighting the stricken vessel while piloting a seaplane during an anti-submarine patrol, Lieutenant Zamucen skillfully landed his plane in the water and, braving intense heat, smoke, and exploding ammunition, taxied to within twenty feet of the blazing oil. After towing one group clear of the increasing ring, he returned and towed a second group to safety. His courageous concern for the safety of others was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
