The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Reuben Calvert, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile enemy force while serving with Company D, 2nd Battalion (Airmobile), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Calvert distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 15 October 1970, while serving as a platoon leader in the Republic of Vietnam. Despite wounds received from a detonated Chicom claymore, First Lieutenant Calvert deployed the men nearest him on line and assaulted the enemy positions. Refusing to be evacuated, he set up a defensive perimeter until ammunition and medical supplies were re-supplied. His gallant actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
