The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Alfred W. Camp (ASN: RA-14342929), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Chonggo-ri, Korea, on 1 January 1951. At about 0100 hours the enemy launched an attack which drove to within hand grenade range of the positions of Company A, to which his machine gun section was attached. The enemy, in a desperate attempt to knock out the machine guns which had been inflicting a terrible toll, worked in close and threw many grenades, one of which fell in his position. The explosion wounded him seriously in the face, blinding him in one eye and hurled his machine gun from its position. Without hesitation and ignoring the terrible pain of his wounds, he climbed from the bunker and set his gun back in place while exposed to the withering hail of enemy fire and grenades. After resetting the gun in position he resumed his devastating fire causing the enemy to abandon the attack and flee in complete disorder. From a partial count of enemy bodies at daylight it was estimated that he hilled 60 enemy during the attack. Private Camp’s courageous actions and devotion to duty aided materially in his unit’s successfully delaying action against overwhelming odds. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Camp, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army infantry.
